Tomorrow we mark the beginning of the Lenten period with an Ash Wednesday service, beginning at 7:00 pm at the church.
These 40 days are meant to be used for the purpose of preparing ourselves for the celebration of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Traditionally, preparation has included the fasting from something. With this in mind, I’d like encourage you to consider what Hebrews 12:1-2 says:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
As you think about what you might fast from, might I suggest that you pick something that weighs us down or entangles you as you strive to follow Christ? It may not necessarily be something sinful in itself, but what about those things which distract you from time that you could give to reading or memorizing Scripture, to prayer, to evangelizing or discipling others?
I hope that you will be able to make the most out of this season. We’d love to have you join us tomorrow night.
