I’ve been reading through the whole of 1 John in preparation for this Sunday’s sermon and I’ve been surprised by how uncomfortably plain and direct he is:
2:4 – Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him…
2:9 – Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.
2:11 – But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
2:18 – If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
2:23 – No one who denies the Son has the Father.
3:6 – No one who abides in him keeps on sin; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.
3:8 – Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning.
3:10 – By this it is evident who are the children of God and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
3:14-15 – Whoever does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
4:6 – …whoever is not from God does not listen to us.
4:8 – Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
4:20 – If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.
5:10 – Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son.
