Advice to a Young Pastor

Get all your nature moulded into love: lose self in God, and dwell there. In your preaching, discover by every word and look the strongest affection for the congregation, and let everything declare your earnest desire for their salvation. Show the greatest respect, and keep from everything harsh. Say strong things, but let your edge be smooth. This will make all men love you, even if they do not leave their sins.

– William Bramwell, quoted in Wesley and Men Who Followed by Iain Murray, p. 129.
