Sermon text for May 3rd – Proverbs 2:1-6

Mike Anderson brought the word to us yesterday. This was actually the first of several passages that he used to lay out 10 principles for how we should respond to uncertain times. Here’s the passage:

1 My son, if you receive my words
and treasure up my commandments with you,
2 making your ear attentive to wisdom
and inclining your heart to understanding;
3 yes, if you call out for insight
and raise your voice for understanding,
4 if you seek it like silver
and search for it as for hidden treasures,
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;

…and here are the principles:

  1. We need to seek wisdom
  2. Gossip fuels the fire (Proverbs 26:20-22)
  3. Don’t be cynical
  4. Instant karma isn’t going to get you (Luke 13:2-5)
  5. God is in control (Psalm 33:10-11)
  6. Acknowledge Jesus (Matthew 10:28-33)
  7. Trust in Jesus (Philippians 1:6)
  8. Ask God for help (Philippians 4:6-7)
  9. God’s people must be prepared to suffer well (1 Peter 3:17)
  10. Jesus is coming back (Titus 2:11-14)
