Sermon text for May 31st – Romans 12:1-2

This Sunday we’re beginning a three-week study on the topic of the will of God: what is it and how do we know it? This isn’t our main text, but a good one to lead off with:

1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, [1] by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. [2] 2 Do not be conformed to this world, [3] but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. [4]

QOTD – Law & Gospel

Ken Jones quoted this helpful summation on the most recent episode (“Rightly Dividing the Word: Law & Gospel) of The White Horse Inn.

The Law is everything that God commands and the Gospel is everything that God gives. And what He gives in the Gospel is everything that He has demanded in the Law.

Waltke On the “Laying Out the Fleece” Method

One of the lessons from the life of Jesus is that people will not turn to God simply because they see a miracle. Instead, they will simply ask for another miracle. So God leaves the miraculous for those few great moments when a miracle is the best way to alter the course of history. Please do not misunderstand me: I do believe in a God who can perform miracles, even in our day. But I don’t find that miracles are the course of events for Christian direction, so I think “laying out the fleece” is generally the lazy man’s way to discern the will of God. It requires no work, little discipline, and almost no character development. God has a different program of guidance.

Nearly 40% of All U.S. Babies Born Out of Wedlock

From The Seattle Times:

More than 1.7 million babies were born to unmarried women in 2007, a 26 percent rise from 2002 and more than double the number in 1980, according to the report from the National Center for Health Statistics. The increase reflected a 21 percent jump in the rates of unmarried women giving birth, which rose from 43.7 per 1,000 women in 2002 to 52.9 per 1,000 women.

That means that unmarried women accounted for 39.7 percent of all U.S. births in 2007 — nearly four of every 10 newborns — up from 34 percent in 2002 and more than double the percentage in 1980.

[...]

Although the report did not examine reasons for the increase, Ventura and other experts said the trend has been driven by a combination of factors, including the lessening of the social stigma associated with unmarried motherhood, an increase in couples delaying or forgoing marriage and growing numbers of financially independent women and older and single women who decide to have children after delaying childbearing.

“Certainly, the social disapproval factor has diminished,” Ventura said.

Some experts said unmarried women are less likely to be shunned if they have children or to be forced to give their children up for adoption.

“Women can have children on their own, and it’s not going to destroy your employment and it’s not going to mean that you’ll be made a pariah by the community,” said Rosanna Hertz, a professor of sociology at Wellesley College.

God’s Will and Your Life

In a few weeks, I’m planning to do a series on the above topic of discerning and following God’s will and I’m looking for your help, which you can provide by answering the following questions:

  1. Do you know what God’s will is for your life?
  2. How do you know? What do you do to determine God’s will in a given situation?
  3. What questions do you have regarding this topic?

That’s it. Just leave your answer in the comment section.

On this topic, I highly recommend the following books:

Sermon text for May 17th – Nehemiah 8:10

Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Sermon text for May 3rd – Proverbs 2:1-6

Mike Anderson brought the word to us yesterday. This was actually the first of several passages that he used to lay out 10 principles for how we should respond to uncertain times. Here’s the passage:

1 My son, if you receive my words
and treasure up my commandments with you,
2 making your ear attentive to wisdom
and inclining your heart to understanding;
3 yes, if you call out for insight
and raise your voice for understanding,
4 if you seek it like silver
and search for it as for hidden treasures,
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;

…and here are the principles:

  1. We need to seek wisdom
  2. Gossip fuels the fire (Proverbs 26:20-22)
  3. Don’t be cynical
  4. Instant karma isn’t going to get you (Luke 13:2-5)
  5. God is in control (Psalm 33:10-11)
  6. Acknowledge Jesus (Matthew 10:28-33)
  7. Trust in Jesus (Philippians 1:6)
  8. Ask God for help (Philippians 4:6-7)
  9. God’s people must be prepared to suffer well (1 Peter 3:17)
  10. Jesus is coming back (Titus 2:11-14)
