Doug Wilson – the Sin of Imputing Motives

20 06 2008

If couples do not allow for differing applications of English, then they will have real trouble communicating. If they allow for it, and come to understand it, they can enjoy their differences. If they do not, such differences will be a real source of temptation. Misunderstanding of what the other is trying to say invites the sin of imputing motives. But when we sinfully impute motives, we hinder our fellowship. The Bible says that love “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Cor. 13:7). Love does not jump to conclusions, and it does not try to read the motives of the other person’s heart. Whenever there has been any kind of conflict, it is very easy to be wrong about the other person’s motives, and very difficult to be right about them.
